our complete guide to
engagEment sessions
Engagement sessions are an opportunity for us to get to know one another better and also for the two of you to get comfortable being in front of the camera together. Beautiful photographs and feeling confident about your wedding day are the result!
Our engagement sessions are relaxed and full of laughter. While your wedding day may be filled with those same elements, your engagement session is a time completely free of any other pressures. Because our schedule is flexible, we'll plan your session around sunrise or sunset - whatever you prefer. This will give us the most beautiful light! We encourage all of our couples to pamper themselves on the day of their engagement session, too. Take the day off from work, go to the spa, get your hair & makeup done, go out for a fancy date night afterwards - whatever it is that helps you relax & feel beautiful, this day is all about you two!
We typically schedule engagement sessions on Mondays through Thursdays in the two hours after sunrise and the two hours before sunset in order to take advantage of the best and most flattering light, also known as "golden hour." You can schedule your session as far in advance as you'd like. We recommend getting your session booked as early as possible to give you the most flexibility in choosing your date and time!
There is no advantage light-wise to one over the other. However, sunrise sessions are a great option for locations that are tourist-y or busy because they are usually empty in the early morning. They are also the best option in the hottest months of the year, when the temperatures in the evening can be uncomfortably hot. Sunset sessions are great for couples who are absolutely, 100% not morning people. They are also the best option in the coldest months of the year, when morning temperatures are too frigid for outdoor photos!
We photograph sessions year-round in every season, and every season has its own beauty to offer. If you have a long stretch of time before your wedding and are not under a deadline or time constraints, we suggest choosing the time of year with elements that you would like to incorporate in your photos. Think about the dress, atmosphere, and props that make sense with your vision. If you find yourself with a limited amount of time and only one season as an option, no worries. Again, every season is beautiful in its own way and has so much to offer!
To officially get the scheduling process started, fill out the questionnaire that was sent with your welcome email and submit, and then we'll be in touch to confirm a date & time!

Before choosing a location, take some time to reflect on your relationship. Think about significant moments, shared interests, and places that hold sentimental value to both of you. Whether it's the place you first met, your favorite coffee shop, a scenic park, or the neighborhood where you had your first date, incorporating personal meaning into your photo session adds authenticity and meaningful details to your photos.
Next, consider your own personal style and the backdrops that feel the most beautiful to you. Are you drawn to urban landscapes, natural settings, or somewhere with historical charm? Consider who you are as a couple. If you live for city life, opt for a vibrant downtown area with iconic landmarks or unique architecture as your backdrop. For a more intimate or rustic feel, explore parks, gardens, or countryside locations. We also encourage you to think outside the box - do you or someone in your networks have access to a location that may typically be off-limits or unusual? Some of our very favorite session locations have been on private estates, rooftops or even in-home.
We also encourage you to keep your chosen season in mind when considering location. Spring brings blooming flowers and vibrant greenery, while summer offers long days and lots of lush greenery. Autumn has colorful foliage, but it isn't always predictable. Winter offers more muted tones and neutrals, particularly outdoors.
If you have flexibility to choose any season, we suggest that you pick your location first, and then schedule your session around the time of year that reflects the beauty you most appreciate for that specific spot. If you are more limited in timing, be sure to think about what your location will look like in that season. We're always happy to offer our input if you feel unsure about what a location will be like at a certain time of year!
If you're struggling to come up with ideas, no worries. We have a huge list of ideas and recommendations, and you can read all about those by referencing the links below!
Finally, make sure to consult with us about any locations that may require a photography permit. National Parks, venues and estates, and even some public buildings require permission and permits, which typically also need to be filed and paid for in advance. We're happy to help you with this step, and you can also consult our Permit FAQs below!

See information below about popular locations that require a permit and other common questions about locations requiring permits.
Any property, including the DC monuments & surrounding areas, that are a part of the National Parks require a $140 permit to photograph engagement sessions. Permit applications must be filed a minimum of 2 weeks in advance, and we are more than happy to complete all of this paperwork for you!
There are several beautiful properties, including many wedding venues and vineyards in the DC, VA & MD, that allow engagement session photography as long as you ask permission and (sometimes) pay a permit fee. Each location is different in their rules, however most permit fees for these locations range from $25-100/hour. We always contact these locations before your session to ensure we have permission to shoot there and are also abiding by all rules and permit requirements. If you have a location in mind like this, simply shoot us a message and we will look into the rules for you!

We get so many questions about what colors to wear! Luckily, there are a few essential rules that will contribute to making you look extra-beautiful. Rules are meant to be broken, so you definitely don't have to follow this guide perfectly - the goal is to help you think through what you'll look & feel best and most confident wearing!
COLORS, PATTERNS & TEXTURES
Start with the basics: neutrals are your best friend. You don't have to be completely monochromatic, but using neutral colors as a base is a great way to start. Black, nude, white, cream & gray are favorites. Cool colors like navy, emerald, dusty blue & burgundy compliment beautifully. Pale pastels are also a great option!
Generally, we suggest avoiding solid shades of neon, hot pink and bright purple. While there's nothing wrong with these colors in and of themselves, these will often reflect unflattering light onto your face & skin. Smaller pops of these colors are totally OK, but avoid wearing as a solid or base color.
The addition of textures & patterns to your outfit is one of our favorite ways to create a look that has depth and style. We highly encourage you to choose a mixture of patterns, textures & solids for the outfits. Don't be afraid to pick a dress with floral print or a bold, patterned tie. We recommend against both of you wearing completely solid colors, if possible. Again, rules are meant to be broken, but all solid colors can sometimes look a bit flat.
Finally, bring it all together with both outfits in mind. The key? Coordinate, don't match. Choose your basic color palette and stick to these, making sure you coordinate.
CLOTHING STYLES
There are a lot of options for clothing! It might feel a little overwhelming - especially if you're like us, and you love SO many different styles! So before we go any further, we want you to think about what flatters your body type most. More than likely, you already know what you do and don't feel great in. Keep this in mind when making selections. Again, you want to feel comfortable & confident!
With that being said, we love clothing that has depth, texture and movement. Long, flowing dresses or skirts give us a lot of options for integrating your outfit into the different types of photos we'll create. For cooler seasons, we also love a layered look. Bring a stylish coat and pair it with boots, and we can create photos choosing to layer the coat in some, but not all, shots.
For grooms, we love sports coat or suit. Try a patterned or textured jacket with pants of a different color to elevate your style and create a unique look. Dark jeans with a stylish shirt also work great if your partner has a more casual look.
We highly recommend that both of you accessorize, perhaps more than your usual. Earrings, necklaces, scarves, bracelets, or even a favorite designer bag are great ways to add dimension to your outfit. Watches, tie clips, pocket squares and belts will also polish your look. Also, don't forget to consider shoes. If you can't find the right pair in your closet, borrow a friend's or treat yourself to a new pair (this is the best excuse to buy yourself that pair of heels you have had your eyes on!) Pretty shoes make a huge difference in photos and also boost confidence!
It may feel a little over-the-top, but this session is your opportunity to be a little bit more stylish & detailed in dress than usual - we're here to help give suggestions, so don't hesitate to send us a quick pic of the outfits as they come together or ask us for suggestions!

Obviously, you want to look your very best for your engagement session! For brides, when it comes to hair and makeup, we recommend hiring a professional! Some of our brides schedule their make-up & hair trial on the same day of the shoot. Or, try a more casual look for hair and softer look for makeup. It's amazing how pampering yourself in this way can not only make you look our best, but also boost your confidence!
Everyone has different makeup preferences, but here are a few specific tips for the camera: wear more makeup than you typically would. Your makeup will photograph lighter and less obviously than what you see in the mirror. Darker, fuller lashes and defined brows are two of our favorite ways to create a natural, radiant look. Again, we highly recommend hiring a hair & makeup artist, and we even have recommendations listed below!
Now, for the grooms. You also have some prep work to look and feel your best! First, facial hair. If you prefer facial hair for your photos, we highly recommend that it's well-trimmed. A beard or mustache is great if it is nicely groomed. Subtle five o'clock shadows can also be sexy and natural. Don't come to the session with messy scruff or unattended neck hair! You also may want to go for a haircut a week or two before your session. Getting a cut the day before the session is a little risky, so schedule an appointment at least a week in advance so your hair has a little time to grow and you have time to choose how to style it.
Pets are a part of your family - we ourselves are huge animal lovers and we'd love to get to know your fur baby, too! By planning carefully and thoughtfully for your engagement session with your pet, we can ensure you have the best and most meaningful experience possible!
First and most importantly - plan to bring a handler for your pup! While it may seem simple enough to drop your dog off in the car or tie the leash to a nearby bench, this never ends up working out well and it typically ends with a lot of stress and frustration. If you can't find a friend or family member that wants to come along to help, we highly recommend the folks at Fur Ever and Fur Always - both for your engagement session and wedding day!
If you absolutely cannot swing a pet-handler to come along for the session, we suggest taking photos with your pet nearby your home first, and then dropping him/her off back at home before continuing on to the next photo location!
It goes without saying that some locations are obviously unsuited for pets - museums, coffee shops, and most indoor locations aren't going to allow pets inside. There are also outdoor locations that also have restrictions for pets. Before settling on a location, be sure to do your research or reach out for our input to see if pets are allowed at the location. Even large, open outdoor areas will sometimes have restrictions. If you need help researching or finding answers, let us know! We'd be happy to help you choose a pet-friendly location!
Just like any other outing with your pet, you should be prepared for his/her needs during your session! Have your pet handler carry along toys, treats & water.
Finally, we suggest that all photos with your pet happen at the beginning of your session. Logistically, this is easiest for you and your pet! We generally suggest that you spend no more than 20 minutes of your session on photos with your pet (as most there is a much shorter variety of photo options when all 3+ of you are in the frame!). We will shoot all of these early, then your handler can take your pet off for a walk, potty break, etc. and we won't have to pause or wait on them! We are always happy to answer any other questions or talk through concerns as you plan for your session, so just let us know how we can help!
An essential part of our job as your photographer is to give you a lot of direction and guidance so that you never feel uncomfortable or put on the spot to come up with ideas. With that in mind, we do suggest that you bring a tangible little piece of your personalities to the session to help us get to know better and tell your story more fully - so let's explain what that means!
We find that sessions which showcase your shared interests and hobbies, even in very subtle ways, make for really beautiful and meaningful photos. This could mean incorporating a favorite activity into the photos - like stopping at your favorite café, cooking together, riding bikes or just strolling around your neighborhood where ou live. These activities not only make the photos unique but also capture the essence of your relationship.
We also encourage you to choose one or two items that reflect your personalities and interests - however basic or simple they may be. Whether it's a bottle of champagne with your favorite flutes, a vintage picnic basket, or something as special and sentimental as hand-written love letters, these small details allow you to interact in a specific way and help guide the vibe of the session. Don't overthink it - if you're feeling stuck, think about an item or activity that would best represent a recent date night that the two of you enjoyed.
Ultimately, the most important thing is that you two are able to feel present and unified arriving to your session. If you can't think of any one item or activity that you want to incorporate, don't sweat it! Not every couple thinks of that one "thing" and we will still create beautiful photos regardless. We have tons of ideas and will give you lots of direction all throughout your session, ensuring you feel comfortable, confident, and uniquely yourselves.
We feel strongly about celebrating the two of you every step of the way. We think that your entire engagement should feel celebratory and special, and we sincerely hope that your engagement session is a big part of that! For that reason, we suggest making an entire day and/or date out of your engagement session.
If you're able, take the entire day off, pamper yourself, go out for an extra-special dinner, and celebrate YOU. There are so many milestones that happen during your engagement, and this session is an opportunity to pause, reflect & enjoy the process.
We find that couples enjoy their engagement sessions so much more when they have filled their day with relaxing, fun and stress-free activities, which also results in photos that feel more "you." You'll enjoy the session more and you won't be distracted by the worry of other things you have to get to that day or the stress of having enough time to get ready.
Some suggestions for what to do with your day: get a couples' massage, go to an over-the-top brunch, have your cake tasting or wine tasting for your wedding, go to your favorite restaurant for a date night, or anything else that feels extra-special! Enjoy the day to the fullest. You're already getting dressed up, might as well take full advantage of the whole process!
Your engagement session is going to be fun, relaxed, and entirely guided by us! As soon as we meet, you'll instantly be directed by us and won't have to worry about a single detail. We also want to do everything we can to ensure that you arrive relaxed, so here are a few pointers that will help you be completely prepare and stress-free.
First, plan plenty of extra time for driving, parking and general arrival. Particularly for city sessions or locations that have a long walk from the parking area, don't plan to arrive at the session start time - plan to arrive at least 20-30 minutes early. Traffic, lack of parking, or a slow Uber driver can all cause unneeded stress. So, when we send you the session start time, we suggest that you plan an arrival about 30 minutes prior!
Your session will be about one hour long, but we suggest blocking two full hours on your calendar for things like we just mentioned - parking, arriving, walking to/from the location - and also a little wiggle room in case we spend a bit of extra time shooting.
Finally, prep your packing list items (see ideas below!) the day/night before your session so you aren't rushing to get everything together at the last minute. This will ensure that you're relaxed and don't forget anything important on the day-of!
